Sharon Regan came along to Kiri Cottage Craft club this morning to run a seashell and resin workshop. It was very enjoyable, and a bit challenging to those like myself who had not painted anything since school!
Kiri Cottage Crafts Club on 18 June 2024 will be a workshop with Sharon Regan Art. We will be working with seashells and resin – see photo below. Cost is £10 and the workshop will run from 10am – 1pm.

We had patchwork at Kiri Cottage craft club this morning, and a lovely ‘show and tell’ piece of stitching – a row of houses ready to be framed.
This afternoon we worked with peg looms, to create sample rag rugs. Really quick, easy and effective way to do produce pretty rugs with the added advantage of recycling old clothes, curtains, bed linen and any other scraps of materials in your stash!
Great fun today with two lovely ladies, who thought they were coming for a therapeutic, social, craft day, and both learned to spin. And we developed knitting skills in the afternoon, mastering plain, purl and rib.

Some knitting, crochet and weaving were the order of the day at Kiri Cottage Craft Club today. Next get together is Tuesday 16 January from 3 – 6pm.

We had a lovely, creative evening at the craft club today.
Karen furthered her spinning skills and learned to ply wool.
Margaret and Miriam brought their knitting – both producing small items for charity sales.
Jill brought crochet hooks and started on Granny squares.
I had some Valois black nose fleece that I had washed and dyed, ready to be carded and spun for a client. I was able to finish carding, and spun most of it. I will finish spinning it tomorrow.
Next open house craft club will be Thursday 7 December, 10am to 1pm. Tea, coffee and buns on tap. No charge just a voluntary spare change contribution to Equine Halfway House Rescue and Refuge, based in Lisburn.

Hats off to Clive from from Welig Heritage Crafts, Portaferry, as he guided four of us through the process of weaving a hare from willow.
We did some Christmas crafting this morning at Barrhall Residential Home when the residents created some lovely tree decorations.
Such creative people! Merry Christmas to all the residents and staff of Barr Hall!
I ran my final craft session of the year with the Portavogie Seniors Club this week. We made some simple ribbon Christmas wreaths.
It never ceases to amaze me how many creative people there are, and how everyone sees a project in a different way. I provided an example (one I made earlier…), and a box full of material strips, ribbons, charms and wooden Christmas decorations on each table, and off everyone went to create their own wreath.
I’d say this was a very successful session and I wish all of the seniors a very Merry Christmas!
Kiri Cottage Crafts Club met for the second time on Thursday morning, 9 November.
As the nights are dark and the weather is not great, we are alternating fortnightly meetings between a Tuesday evening and Thursday morning.
We had a great mix of crafts – I have a pile of alpaca to spin so it was great to have 3 hours just to sit, spin, chat and eat cake.
Karen got the time to almost finish the binding on her beautiful latch rug (and the incentive to take it home to finish the last wee bit!).
Sharon is weaving a picture on a weaving frame – an interpretation of a painting of a view very close to where we were.
Susan let us see how to use a 3D printer and brought along some great Christmas decorations that she made on it (and got first prize for that evening at her local WI competition!)
Next get together is Tuesday 21 November 6-9pm. Coffee and buns will be available, as always!

We agreed that the club would meet one evening and one morning a month, as especially coming into the dark evenings, not everyone wants to venture out.

The very creative ladies and gentleman of Ballywalter Seniors Club made a herd of alpacas at their meeting last Monday.
Armed with felt, beads, ribbon and a rainbow of embroidery threads, they stitched their way through the session, most not even stopping to have their tea and sandwiches (well, until the pineapple delights arrived…).
Great, enthusiastic bunch – thank you all for an entertaining afternoon!
I have followed, and supported, Paddy for a number of years now and am delighted to say this harness weaving will most likely be a regular feature of the brand new Crafts Club!
I hosted a donkey harness weaving workshop for Finnigan Tools.
Paddy has engineered a unique, sustainable and welfare focussed method of making harness for donkeys, and we were privileged to learn the method and make some parts for the harness here at Kiri Cottage Crafts on the Ards Peninsula. They will be sent out to his working partner in Africa.

As part of the Ards and North Down Council run Creative Peninsula, I ran a spinning and a peg loom weaving workshop.
I ran a couple of craft sessions in collaboration with Mourne Alpacas, Dromara this month, with groups of students from local schools.
The teenagers spent the mornings being introduced to the alpacas (and all the other animals on the farm), learning about alpacas, about their fleeces and all the things that can be made from it.
I ran beaded bracelets sessions with them, using pony beads and alpaca charms, and was amazed at their creativity and how engaged they were with the craft.
This Rag Rug workshop take two, with Portavogie seniors a couple of weeks, ago saw us making rag rugs on Hessian sacking with crochet hooks and rug latch tools.
There was lots of chat, and hard work helped with the creativity. A cup of tea and a biscuit was very welcome!
This workshop offered an insight into traditional craft industries that provided an income for women on the Ards Peninsula in the 1800s.
I have been commissioned to provide a number of craft sessions for both Portavogie and Ballywalter senior clubs. The first of these workshops ran this week with a lovely group of ladies in Portavogie.

The residents in Barr Hall Residential Home were gearing up for Valentine’s day this morning, by colouring in hearts, and decorating them with crystals, ribbons and beads.
I ran a craft session with the residents of Barr Hall Residential Home to make a New Year Banner.
