Knitting in Glastonbury

Kiri Cottage Knitting in Glastonbury 1

I was away for a few days visiting a good friend in Glastonbury and of course the knitting came too.

I had lots of remnants from previous projects and donations, so I knotted them all together, wound it up on a wool winder and am using it double to make a long gilet.

In the background you can see some sourdough dough that I had mixed with a good, well risen starter – it was ready to bake the next morning.

Mittens, Hats, Socks and Scarves

Kiri Cottage Mittens Hats Socks and Scarves 1

My current commission is to spin some dog hair and make mittens, hats, socks and scarves for the client’s young nieces.

The dog hair is quite short and will not spin at all well on its own, so I have blended it with some alpaca, spun it as a single, and plied with a fine, commercial acrylic yarn.

First two hats completed

Game of Wool 4

Kiri Cottage Game of Wool 4

This is the jumper I was asked to knit by a client, based on one that got shrunk in the wash.

I include it in a series of items I plan to knit, following what is knit/ crocheted in the Game of Wool program. I didn’t exactly follow the Game of Wool criteria in that I didn’t design it from scratch, however the client wanted a different yarn type, so I had to find appropriate yarn and work out needle size, tension etc before I could start.

This was based on the 80’s style mohair jersey made, I think, in episode 2.

Game of Wool 3

Kiri Cottage Game of Wool 3

And it’s finished. Ends sewn in and blocked.

I crocheted arm and neck bands as it looked neater than picking up stitches to knit them.

I chose waves and viking ships as the Vikings are historically linked with the Strangford area.

Next project will be the ’80s mohair jersey. Except I will be cheating a bit. I have been asked to knit an acrylic mohair style jersey from an old 1980s mohair pattern. Very little brushed acrylic out there in all of the colours that I need, and at the right weight of wool. So I have bought yarn in a different weight and will need to knit swatches to get correct needles and tension. So I have a bit of a challenge, but not the design work.

Game of Wool 2

Kiri Cottage Game of Wool 2

It’s not quite finished yet, another hour or so. So it will have taken between 10 and 11 hours to knit.

Will post again when finished

Game of Wool

Kiri Cottage Game of Wool 1

I have been watching Game of Wool – not out of any particular liking for this type of program, rather because knitting is one of my crafts and I wanted to know what people would be talking about.

I have no comments or observations about it, it is what it is. But it did inspire me and challenge me to see if I could do any of the projects, using the same criteria that contestants were given.

So I picked their first challenge – a fair isle style tank top, knit in bulky yarn on a circular needle. I took time to create a pattern, choose colours and get ready to knit. About 4 hours in, this is what I have knitted to so far. Can you tell what the motifs are?

View From The Office

Kiri Cottage View From The Office 1

Castle Espie was the ‘view from the office’ today, more precisely the Lime Kiln Bird Observatory.

I was to take part in the Ards & North Down Council ‘Shorelife Festival’ earlier in the month, however it was cancelled courtesy of storm Amy. The Council then very kindly offered a number of us the chance to exhibit at Castle Espie today, so Welig Crafts, Strangford Lough Activity Centre, myself and MRS MAKER is ART offered a range of activities to visitors to the castle today.

Despite the very changeable weather, plenty of visitors had a go at painting, archery, and making bracelets, and watched willow weaving in action, all with a shore life theme.

Below are photos of my activities, the calm before the storm…..both in relation to numbers of visitors and the weather

Bichon Freise Commission Spinning

Kiri Cottage Bichon Freise Commission 3

This is where I finished up yesterday evening – one full bobbin, and one nearly full,
Will definitely be a ‘textured’ yarn when finished.

Bichon Freise Commission Continued

Kiri Cottage Bichon Freise Commission 2

There was about 600gm Bichon Freise, and 200g washed, carded long wool (can’t remember which breed). It’s all been through the Brother Drum Carder twice, and that has helped to blend the dog hair more consistently through the fleece. Now to the spinning whee

Bichon Freise Commission

Kiri Cottage Bichon Freise Commission 1

I have taken on an interesting commission – to spin Bichon Freise hair for a lady. Sadly her little dog passed over the rainbow bridge a few months ago and she wants to have a memory of her.

Kiri Cottage Crafts Club Rename

We have now become an ‘unincorporated constituted group’, and renamed ourselves ‘The Makers’ Moot’. The main aim of our group is to help retain, share and promote local heritage, and other crafts by increasing our skills and knowledge as a group. Craft Demonstrations

Kiri Cottage Craft Demonstrations 1

As part of Ards and North Down Council’s Creative Peninsula, craft demonstrations were set up in the North Down Museum in Bangor on Sunday 3 August.

I brought several lucets, a Scandinavian braiding tool, for demonstration. Lots of chat with interested visitors, and a few who tried it out Lucets were used to create decorative braids and trimmings for clothings and household, and also to make more practical cordage and fine rope.

Opportunity for Creativity

Kiri Cottage Opportunity for Creativity 1

Ards and North Down Council kicked off Creative Peninsula on Friday 1 August in the square in newtownards. A number of us did some demonstrations in the Arts Centre, offering opportunities for the visitors to have a go at the crafts on display.
I had brought a number of peg looms and had plenty of customers, aged from under 10 to over 80.

Peg loom weaving is fun, easy to learn and provides an opportunity for creativity.

Thursday with Molly

Kiri Cottage Thursday with Molly 1

I had a lovely morning on Thursday with Molly, over from England and staying with her daughter Zoe for a couple of weeks.
An experienced knitter, Molly was interested in the Scandinavian craft of nalbinding. So we spent a couple of hours nalbinding, between cups of coffee and homemade cherry and lemon scones, and soda bread.

Donated Fleeces

Kiri Cottage Donated Fleeces 1

I was given about 20 fleeces this morning from a local farmer – a very welcome gift.

The first job to do is to ‘skirt’ the fleeces which involves removing both the very dirty fleece, and the shorter and weathered parts of the fleece as using these would create a poorer quality yarn once spun.

The Makers’ Moot

Kiri Cottage The Makers' Moot 1

We have now renamed our club ‘The Makers’ Moot’, and are setting it up as an unincorporated constituted group and hope to be able to apply for grants, once our bank account has been finalised, so that we can access craft courses and learn new skills.

A while ago I bought myself the ‘Japanese Knitting Stitch Bible ‘. It is a beautiful book, with patterns for many intricate stitches. Think Aran knitting but much finer and more complex. I came across it the other day and wondered how many people are aware of this knitting style?

Worsted and Woollen at Kiri Cottage

Kiri Cottage Spinning

When spinning wool, we often talk about 2 different techniques – worsted and woollen. The difference between worsted and woollen spinning techniques lies mainly in fiber preparation, yarn structure, and final fabric properties.

The Estonian Braid, also known as the Vikkel or Lateral Braid, is a traditional knitting technique from Eastern Europe. It creates a horizontal chain of “V” stitches across the fabric, often used as a decorative border on hats, gloves, mittens, sweaters, or other garments. This technique is valued for its ability to add both structure and visual interest to knitting projects.

While researching, I came across this article about green dye that was used in the Victorian age. It is most certainly not for the squeamish.

History of Knitting

Kiri Cottage History of Knitting 1

Knitting likely originated in the Middle East or Egypt between the 11th and 12th centuries. The earliest known knitted artifacts are Egyptian socks, which demonstrate complex techniques like colorwork and purl stitches, suggesting an older origin than archaeological evidence can confirm.

The Blackberry (Trinity) Stitch

Kiri Cottage Blackberry or Trinity Stitch 1

The Blackberry stitch, also known as the Trinity stitch, derives its name from its resemblance to clusters of blackberries.
Its textured, raised design is formed by knitting three stitches together and then creating three new stitches in the same spot, mimicking the appearance of small berry-like bumps.

Shepherd’s Knitting

Kiri Cottage Shepherd's Knitting 1

Shepherd’s knitting, also known as slip-stitch crochet, is a precursor to modern crochet. It originated in northern Europe and was practiced in regions like Scotland, Estonia, Sweden, and Romania. This craft involved looping yarn with a hooked tool called a shepherd’s hook, which was thicker than modern crochet hooks and resembled a shepherd’s staff.

Origins of Crochet

Kiri Cottage Origins of Crochet 1

The exact origins of crochet are somewhat unclear, but historians have pieced together a fascinating history of this craft. Crochet as we know it today is believed to have emerged in Europe during the early 19th century.
The first definitive evidence of crochet appeared in 1823 when the Dutch magazine Penélopé published a pattern for a crocheted bag. This pattern included instructions for three different styles of purses using various crochet stitches, marking the earliest known publication of crochet instructions.

Chiengora

Kiri Cottage Chiengora 1

Here’s a little story about spinning dog hair or ‘chiengora’ as it is also known.

Once upon a time, in a small mountain village, there lived a woman named Lian. She was known for her remarkable skill in spinning and weaving, creating the warmest and softest garments anyone had ever worn. But her secret wasn’t wool from sheep or fur from rabbits—it was something far more unusual.

Knitting and Crochet Sessions

Kiri Cottage Knitting and Crochet Sessions 1

I have been involved in helping to facilitate a few workshops over the last week or so, funded and delivered by the Department for the Economy, and Ards & North Down Council.

Kiri Cottage Craft Club 16th January 2024

This afternoon we worked with peg looms, to create sample rag rugs. Really quick, easy and effective way to do produce pretty rugs with the added advantage  of recycling old clothes, curtains, bed linen and any other scraps of materials in your stash!

Great fun today with two lovely ladies, who thought they were coming for a therapeutic, social, craft day, and both learned to spin. And we developed knitting skills in the afternoon, mastering plain, purl and rib.

Soda Bread at Cockle Row Cottages

Kiri Cottage Crafts Cockle Row Cottages Soda Bread 1

This was a visit to Cockle Row Cottages this afternoon for another soda bread making demo.

I shared the cottage with Santa and one of his elves. There were also two visiting alpacas and a lovely group of flautists playing Christmas songs.

The soda bread was very popular with visitors and I hope to be back again very soon.

Merry Christmas to all at Cockle Row Cottages!

Kiri Cottage Crafts Club 21st November

We had a lovely, creative evening at the craft club today.

Karen furthered her spinning skills and learned to ply wool.

Margaret and Miriam brought their knitting – both producing small items for charity sales.

Jill brought crochet hooks and started on Granny squares.

I had some Valois black nose fleece that I had washed and dyed, ready to be carded and spun for a client. I was able to finish carding, and spun most of it. I will finish spinning it tomorrow.

Next open house craft club will be Thursday 7 December, 10am to 1pm. Tea, coffee and buns on tap. No charge just a voluntary spare change contribution to Equine Halfway House Rescue and Refuge, based in Lisburn.

Future dates:

Thursday 7 December, 10am – 1pm

Tuesday 19 December 6 – 9pm

Thursday 4 January 10am – 1pm

Tuesday 16 January 6- 9pm

Thursday 1 February 10am – 1pm

Look forward to seeing you!

Final Session with Portavogie Seniors

Kiri Cottage Crafts Portavogie Seniors 2023 11 24 5

I ran my final craft session of the year with the Portavogie Seniors Club this week. We made some simple ribbon Christmas wreaths.

It never ceases to amaze me how many creative people there are, and how everyone sees a project in a different way. I provided an example (one I made earlier…), and a box full of material strips, ribbons, charms and wooden Christmas decorations on each table, and off everyone went to create their own wreath.

I’d say this was a very successful session and I wish all of the seniors a very Merry Christmas!

Kiri Cottage Crafts Club 9th November Meeting Photos

Kiri Cottage Crafts Club met for the second time on Thursday morning, 9 November.

As the nights are dark and the weather is not great, we are alternating fortnightly meetings between a Tuesday evening and Thursday morning.

We had a great mix of crafts – I have a pile of alpaca to spin so it was great to have 3 hours just to sit, spin, chat and eat cake.

Karen got the time to almost finish the binding on her beautiful latch rug (and the incentive to take it home to finish the last wee bit!).

Sharon is weaving a picture on a weaving frame – an interpretation of a painting of a view very close to where we were.

Susan let us see how to use a 3D printer and brought along some great Christmas decorations that she made on it (and got first prize for that evening at her local WI competition!)

Next get together is Tuesday 21 November 6-9pm. Coffee and buns will be available, as always!

Kiri Cottage Crafts Club 9th November Meeting

Kiri Cottage Crafts Club 17 October 2023 8

This evening was the first get together of the Kiri Cottage Craft Club. A small but select group of 5 crafters crocheted, embroidered and spun, shared stories and craic, coffee and cake.

We agreed that the club would meet one evening and one morning a month, as especially coming into the dark evenings, not everyone wants to venture out.

Ballywalter Seniors Craft Session 4

The very creative ladies and gentleman of Ballywalter Seniors Club made a herd of alpacas at their meeting last Monday.

Armed with felt, beads, ribbon and a rainbow of embroidery threads, they stitched their way through the session, most not even stopping to have their tea and sandwiches (well, until the pineapple delights arrived…).

Great, enthusiastic bunch – thank you all for an entertaining afternoon!

Donkey Harness Weaving

Kiri Cottage Donkey Harness Weaving 2

I hosted a donkey harness weaving workshop for Finnigan Tools.

Paddy has engineered a unique, sustainable and welfare focussed method of making harness for donkeys, and we were privileged to learn the method and make some parts for the harness here at Kiri Cottage Crafts on the Ards Peninsula. They will be sent out to his working partner in Africa.

This Rag Rug workshop take two, with Portavogie seniors a couple of weeks, ago saw us making rag rugs on Hessian sacking with crochet hooks and rug latch tools.

There was lots of chat, and hard work helped with the creativity. A cup of tea and a biscuit was very welcome!

I have been commissioned to provide a number of craft sessions for both Portavogie and Ballywalter senior clubs. The first of these workshops ran this week with a lovely group of ladies in Portavogie.

Make Along Week 1

Kiri Cottage Make Along Week 1

I decided to make something for myself for a change, and came across a ‘Make Along’ from the Danish wool sales company Hobbii:

https://hobbii.co.uk/noshadesofgrey-make-along-for-knitters

Interestingly, they don’t let you see the final garment, but release parts of the pattern every week over a six week period.  There is both a knitted and a crochet option, and you can buy a kit from them, or buy your own wool and access the pattern for free.

Speciality Hand Spun Wool

Kiri Cottage Speciality Hand Spun Wool

I have recently completed a 3kg batch of my specialty hand-spun, hand-dyed, thick singles, destined for a customer who is a weaver. This yarn (approximately bulky/ super chunky weight) will make a lovely, thick, warm and colourful material. It it also suitable for knitting and crochet.

Working with Alpaca Wool

I have been working with alpaca wool for many years now, but, a number of clients asked me to spin their own alpaca’s fleeces for them over the last few months.

Spinning and Dyeing

I have been spinning and dyeing wool for many years for my weaver friend, Marion. This weekend I completed another 10kgs for her.

Knit for Nowt!

‘Worry Monsters’ are used by therapists to help children deal with their worries and concerns. They have a big pouch in their tummies where children can put their worries, written on paper, and the monster eats them.

Kircubbin – The Ards Peninsula: An Ulster-Scots Heartland
